- Painting Kraken Genestealer Hybrids -
this guide shows how i painted my Hybrids for hive-fleet Kraken. being different from the rest of the fleet, i thought those needed a guide of their own. it's sad that the tyranid armies don't allow those anymore, but they work fine as Gaunts and adds something different to use.
What do you need?
Skin to paint the skin is exactly the same as the whole fleet, so i'm not showing step-by step pics on this (it can be found in the kraken tutorial).
Black/Dots coat the whole model in chaos black. paint the black dots on the head, this is no must but adds some more detail and shows that those are more tyranid than the cultists. also paint the eyes and teeth in a black basecoat.
Grey highlihts next up Drybrush the black "armour" with codex grey. be carefull to make a good drybrush, one advice is to be quite experienced at drybrushing because if not, the well-painted kraken flesh might just look out of place on the model. also, drybrushing is no must, you can layer and blend if desired. i just found that too much work myself.
Robes robes was picked out in purple, to add variation from the fleet, but still it matches and gives a classic cult feel to them. paint the robes in liche purple. then mix 50/50 of liche purple and skull white. drybrush it on carefully and make sure it really is dry as it would otherwise be a bad result as bright colours are hard to drybrush properly.
Metal drybrush the gun, knife and backpack with boltgun metal. finish of by highlighting the blade on the knife with mithril silver
Feet/bags paint all the bags and ammo pockets and the feet in scorched brown. drybrush with bestial brown
Tubes the tubes was painted to match the fleets organic tubes, green. start with painting them in dark angels green , continue layer with snot green and scorpion green
Edges the armour Edges was picked out in red to match and represent the fleet's carapaces, and so was the hybrid's claws (obviously). do exactly like the carapaces, start with scab red and work your way through red gore, blood red and finaly blazing orange to blend the red. also pick out the eyes in the same manner
Teeth the teeth was painted in skull white. also note that this pic shows a better look of the eye.
Finishing finish of the model by giving it a coat of gloss varnish, followed by matt varnish. the gloss is added for two reasons, first of the gloss coat gives better protection than matt does (matt is more of a matt-down coat and nothing more). also, the matt are ruining ink, making it flow out in the varnish (don't ask me why) and then it misscolours the bone). but the gloss doesn't. so take this as a serious advice when you want to varnish inked models. next step is to finish the base, and then tou're done!. now let the hybrid serve the hive mind in battle.
How to add variation? if you have had a look at the hybrid model's many are the same as there are quite few different poses, and/or you just own a few that many are the same model. don't worry!. there is a solution to this. i chosed to paint them in oposite combination of black and purple (see the pic for example). one have purple robes and the other have black robes, but in addition have his hood purple insteed. this is a good way to vary but still keep the theme. also note that the more human hybrids also have the kraken skin, this to see they are starting to become hybrids and/or already are hybrids in a more human manner. i did also chose to not give them black dots, however that's an idea if having a 3rd of the same sculpt.
