- Painting hive-fleet Kraken -

this guide shows you how to paint hive fleet kraken. almost like GWs scheme but with a slight different touch to carapaces and some detailing. the tutorial shows how to paint a hormagaunt, but these basics are the same on all the models. also you can see i paint some parts seperatly, that is to easier reach and paint every detail. this is recomended for most models.

What do you need?
-a good detail brush
-a brush for basecoating and inking
-chaos black
-Skull white
-bubonic brown
-Flesh Wash
-Bleached Bone
-Scab red
-Red gore
-blood red
-blazing orange

you might need: (shown bellow the hormagaunt guide)
-Dark Angels green
-Snot Green
-scorpion green
-tentacle pink

Base Coating

after spraying the model in skull white, paint a base coat of bubonic brown.

Skin

the skin is painted by applying several steps. start by inking the whole skin with flesh wash. after that is dry, layer the raised details with bubonic brown. after this you need to do a 50/50 mix of bubonic brown and bleached bone. finish of by highlighting the most raised areas with bleached bone.

Carapace

coat the armour plates with chaos black (coat the teeth and eyes too). then make thin striper from the edges and goin along the carapace and ends at about half the carapace (inwards). then continue with doing stripes(but shorter each time with red gore and blood red, and finish with using blazing orange on the edge if the stripe. do this process with the eyes aswell.

Teeth

layer the teeth with skull white

Parts (arms/legs)

now all the parts (painted same time as the body, using same techniques ) should be finished.

Finish

once all parts are done, assemble the model using superglue. for larger models it's important to use pinning to make sure the model won't fall apart (you don't want that to happen!). finish of the model with gloss and matt varnish once the glue is dry. the gloss is added for two reasons, first of the gloss coat gives better protection than matt does (matt is more of a matt-down coat and nothing more). also, the matt are ruining ink, making it flow out in the varnish (don't ask me why) and then it misscolours the bone). but the gloss doesn't. so take this as a serious advice when you want to varnish inked models. next step is to finish the base and it's ready to serve the swarm.

Adding Detail

you might like to detail the larger creatures more, and black dots are a good way to detail the skin more. you can simply paint those using chaos black.

tubes are details that are often included on bio-weapons (obviously not shown on the hormagaunt)
those can be picked out in green. paint them in dark angels green and layer snot green and scorpion green.

tongue and tooth-flesh can be picked out in tentacle pink. however, for some large models i did choose a purple tongue. those was painted in liche purple, then by a 50/50 mix of liche purple and skull white, finish highlights with adding 25% more white. the pink tongues was just painted like the red, but replacing blazing orange with tentacle pink as final highlight.
